Teach: Captured Pieces

Captured Pieces

In this lesson, you will learn about captured pieces, one of the most important concepts in shogi. Rather than memorizing words alone, aim to explain the system and reasons in your own words.

Key Point
Captured pieces can be dropped on your turn, but moves such as nifu, placing two pawns on the same file, are prohibited.
Important Points
  • Check the reasons, not only the conclusion
  • Distinguish similar terms and exceptions
  • Try applying the same way of thinking to other examples

Practice

  1. Explain the key point in two sentences.
  2. Give one common misunderstanding and explain what is different.
  3. Check your understanding by applying it to a familiar or specific example.
