不定詞の慣用表現
too...to / enough to / only to V などの不定詞を使った頻出構文を整理します。
基本ルール
① too + 形容詞/副詞 + to V：「〜すぎて...できない」= so ~ that S can't V
「He is too tired to work.」意味上の主語：「The box is too heavy for me to lift.」
② 形容詞/副詞 + enough + to V：「〜するのに十分...だ」（enough は形容詞の後ろ）
「She is old enough to vote.」= so old that she can vote
③ only to V：「〜したが、結局...となった」（期待外れの結果）
「He studied hard, only to fail the exam.」
④ never to V：「〜して、二度と...しなかった」（結果）
「She left home never to return.」
📘 例文
The water is too cold for me to swim in.（水が冷たすぎて泳げない）
He was clever enough to solve the puzzle.（パズルを解くのに十分賢かった）
She went to the station only to find the train had left.（駅に行ったが電車はすでに出た後だった）

注意点
① enough の位置：必ず形容詞・副詞の後ろ。「× enough old → ○ old enough」
② too...to の否定：「too ~ to V」はそれ自体が否定の意味（「できない」）を含む。
③ in order not to V / so as not to V：否定の目的。「He left early so as not to miss the train.」
💡 ポイント
- too ~ to V：〜すぎて...できない（= so ~ that S can't V）
- ~ enough to V：〜するのに十分（enough は形容詞の後ろ！）
- only to V：〜したが結局（期待外れの結果）
- never to V：〜して二度と...しなかった（結果）
練習
- 「彼女は一人でその問題を解くほど賢かった」を enough to を使って英訳しなさい。
- 「その石は重すぎて私には動かせない」を too...to と for を使って英訳しなさい。
- 次を so...that を使って書き換えなさい：He was too shy to speak in public.
