英語には「意味は通るが不自然」という組み合わせが多数存在します。コロケーション (連語) は、ある語が自然に結びつく相手の語のパターンで、空所補充・整序作文・記述英作文で頻出します。
基本ルール
動詞＋名詞のコロケーション：
- make: make a decision / make an effort / make a mistake / make progress / make sense
- take: take a risk / take responsibility / take advantage of / take into account / take action
- pay: pay attention / pay a visit / pay the price
- draw: draw a conclusion / draw attention
- reach: reach a conclusion / reach an agreement / reach a consensus
形容詞＋名詞のコロケーション：strong evidence (× powerful evidence)、heavy rain (× strong rain)、significant difference、widespread concern
副詞＋形容詞のコロケーション：deeply concerned / highly unlikely / widely believed / closely related
これらは日本語の直訳では発想できない組み合わせが多く、「make a decision」を「decide a decision」のように誤って作文してしまうのが典型的なミス。
The committee reached a consensus after hours of debate.（委員会は数時間の議論の後に合意に達した）← reach a consensus
There is strong evidence that the policy reduced crime rates.（その政策が犯罪率を減らしたという強い証拠がある）← strong evidence (× powerful)
It is widely believed that early education has a lasting impact.（早期教育が持続的な影響を持つことは広く信じられている）← widely believed
Researchers are deeply concerned about the long-term effects of the chemical.（研究者はその化学物質の長期的影響を深く懸念している）← deeply concerned

間違えやすいところ
① make / take / do の使い分けは特に混同しやすい：make a mistake (× do a mistake)、take a break (× make a break)、do harm (× make harm)。動詞のニュアンス (create=make / undertake=take / perform=do) から考える。
② 形容詞の強調語も語によって固定されている：heavy rain / heavy traffic だが heavy pain は不自然 (severe pain が自然)。this-goes-with-that の感覚は多読・多用例で身につける。
③ 記述式の自由英作文で減点される最大の原因は文法ミスよりコロケーション違反である場合が多い。「意味は通じるが不自然」は採点者に「不自然な英語」という印象を与える。
④ 対策としては、単語を覚える際に必ず「よく一緒に使われる動詞・形容詞」までセットで覚える。辞書のコロケーション欄・例文を確認する習慣が重要。
