Fix the mistake: Grade 6 Foreign Language
Let's Talk About the Past in English
We will learn how to talk about things that have already ended, such as "I went ..." and "I ate ...." This is the first step toward learning the past tense in detail in junior high school.
Basic Rules
The verb "go" changes to "went" when talking about the past. The verb "eat" changes to "ate." Verbs that change completely in this way are called irregular verbs. Say "I went to ..." to mean "I went to ..." and "I ate ..." to mean "I ate ...."
Example Sentences
I went to Okinawa last summer.
I ate a lot of ice cream.
It was fun.
I went to Okinawa last summer.
I ate a lot of ice cream.
It was fun.
注意
In addition to go → went and eat → ate, gradually learn the past forms of other commonly used verbs, such as see → saw, have → had, and buy → bought. To describe a past state, use was, the past form of is / am (It was fun.). In junior high school, you will learn these rules in more detail.
Key Points
- go → went / eat → ate
- see → saw / have → had / buy → bought
- is / am → was
- "I did ...": I + a verb in the past form
Practice
- Write "I went to Kyoto" in English.
