パラグラフライティング — PREP法
英語の段落は「主張 → 理由 → 例 → 主張の再確認」という型を持っています。PREP法を使えば論理的な段落が書けます。
基本ルール
PREP法：
- Point（主張）：段落の最初の文で結論を述べる
- Reason（理由）：なぜそう言えるのか、論理的な根拠を示す
- Example（具体例）：実例・データ・統計で根拠を補強
- Point（主張の再確認）：段落の最後で結論を強調
例（PREPで書かれた段落）：
「P: Reading books is the best way to expand your knowledge.
R: Books allow you to learn from experts who have spent years studying their fields.
E: For example, by reading 'Sapiens' by Yuval Noah Harari, you can understand the entire history of humanity in just a few weeks.
P: Therefore, if you want to grow intellectually, you should make reading a daily habit.」
PREP の応用：
- 1段落 = 1主張：複数の主張を1段落に詰め込まない
- 100〜150 words が高校英作文の標準的な1段落
- 5文構成が目安（P + R + E + 補足 + P）
Topic: Exercise is essential for students.
1. (P) Regular exercise is essential for high school students.
2. (R) It improves both physical health and concentration in class.
3. (E) A recent study found that students who exercise 30 minutes a day score 15% higher on tests.
4. (補足) Moreover, exercise reduces stress, which is important during exam seasons.
5. (P) Therefore, schools should encourage daily physical activity.
注意点
① 主張は具体的に：「Reading is good」は曖昧。「Reading books expands knowledge」のように具体的に。
② 理由と例の区別：理由は「なぜ」、例は「実際にこうだった」。「Books are educational（理由）because they contain information from experts. For instance, ...（例）」
③ 過度な「I think」連発：書き出しが毎回「I think」だと幼稚に見える。「In my view」「It seems to me」「Arguably」など多様に。
④ 結論文の表現：Therefore / Thus / Hence / As a result / In conclusion を使って明示。
⑤ 1段落の長さ：短すぎる（2-3文）は内容不足、長すぎる（10文以上）は焦点ぼけ。5〜7文が目安。
- PREP: Point → Reason → Example → Point
- 1段落 = 1主張、5〜7文、100〜150 words
- 具体的な主張を書く（曖昧表現を避ける）
- 結論を明示する Therefore / Thus / In conclusion
- 主張表現の多様化（In my view / Arguably）
練習
- トピック「Smartphones are useful for students」について PREP 法で5文の段落を書きなさい。
- 主張：「Studying abroad is valuable」に対する Reason と Example を1つずつ英語で書きなさい。
- 主張の表現を3通り書きなさい（I think 以外で）。
