Let’s Share Our Memories — A Bridge to Junior High School English

As you practice sharing memories of elementary school life in English, let’s review how to make sentences that will connect to junior high school English.

Basic Rules

When sharing memories, use the past tense. To say “My best memory is ~,” say "My best memory is ..." and then continue with what you did, such as "I went to ..." (I went to ~) or "I enjoyed ..." (I enjoyed ~). You can also say “~ was the most fun” as "It was the most fun."

Example Sentences
My best memory is our school trip. (My best memory is our school trip.)
I went to Kyoto with my friends. (I went to Kyoto with my friends.)
I enjoyed the sports day very much. (I enjoyed the sports day very much.)

Notes

In junior high school, you will study be verbs, ordinary verbs, the past tense, the future tense, and other topics together with more detailed rules. If you practice making sentences while paying attention to the “subject + verb” form now, you will move smoothly into junior high school English. Little by little, increase your writing practice as well as your speaking and listening practice.

Key Points
  • Memories: My best memory is ...
  • What you enjoyed: I enjoyed ...
  • Pay attention to the “subject + verb” form
  • In junior high school, you will do more reading and writing practice

Practice

  1. Try writing about your best memory of elementary school life in English.
  2. Write “I enjoyed the sports day” in English.
  3. Try writing in your native language about the English studies you want to work hard on in junior high school.
