倒置構文 — 否定語先頭・場所副詞先頭
否定語や場所の副詞句が文頭に来ると、語順が倒置します。入試で頻出の倒置パターンを覚えましょう。
基本ルール
否定語が強調のため文頭に出ると、疑問文の語順（助動詞/be動詞 + S）になります。
- Never：「Never have I seen such a beautiful sunset.」
- Not until：「Not until midnight did he finish his work.」
- Hardly/Scarcely ... when/before：「Hardly had she arrived when the phone rang.」
- No sooner ... than：「No sooner had he sat down than the bell rang.」
- Only + 副詞（句・節）：「Only then did I understand.」
場所・方向の副詞句が文頭：「On the hill stood an old castle.」← V + S の語順
📘 例文
Never did I expect to win the prize.（賞を取るとは思ってもいなかった）
Not until he spoke did I recognize him.（彼が話して初めて、彼だとわかった）
Hardly had I closed my eyes when I fell asleep.（目を閉じるやいなや眠ってしまった）
In front of the building stood two tall trees.（建物の前に2本の大きな木が立っていた）
Never did I expect to win the prize.（賞を取るとは思ってもいなかった）

注意点
① 一般動詞の場合：do/does/did を補って倒置。「Never do I eat breakfast.」
② Not until の強調構文との書き換え：「It was not until midnight that he finished.」= 「Not until midnight did he finish.」
③ Hardly/No sooner の時制：過去完了（had + p.p.）で始まるのが正式。

- 否定語・準否定語が文頭 → 助動詞/be + S の語順
- Never / Not until / Hardly / No sooner は倒置を引き起こす
- Hardly had S p.p. when + 過去（〜するやいなや）
- 場所副詞句先頭 → V + S（自動詞）
