Performance comparison: which is faster?
Radeon HD 6970 (AMD, 2011) and Radeon HD 7850 (AMD, 2012) are compared here. Compare scores and VRAM, generative AI usability, and CPUs that pair well with each GPU.
Overall performance: HD 6970 is about 11.1% faster
Both have 2GB of VRAM, so they support a similar range of generative AI models. For gaming, prioritize performance score and CPU compatibility; for AI, prioritize VRAM.
Relative performance score (higher is faster). Actual fps varies by resolution, game, and CPU configuration.
| Item | HD 6970 | HD 7850 |
|---|---|---|
| Performance Score | 4,000 | 3,600 |
| VRAM | 2GB | 2GB |
| Manufacturer | AMD | AMD |
| Series | HD 6000 | HD 7000 |
| Release Year | 2011 | 2012 |
| Compatible CPU Example | AMD Phenom II X4 945 | AMD Athlon II X4 640 |
| If You Want To... | Recommended |
|---|---|
| Prioritize high fps and smooth performance in demanding games | HD 6970 |
| Run larger generative AI and LLM models | HD 6970 |
| Prioritize value and adequate performance | HD 7850 (the lower model is often sufficient) |
HD 6970 is about 11.1% higher by score (HD 6970: 4000 points / HD 7850: 3600 points). Actual fps also varies by resolution, game, and CPU, so price is a reasonable deciding factor when the gap is only a few percent.
Both have 2GB of VRAM, so the range of generative AI models they can run is nearly the same.
Using our guideline, AMD Phenom II X4 945 pairs well with HD 6970 and AMD Athlon II X4 640 with HD 7850 (CPU:GPU ≈ 0.9:1). If the CPU is too weak, replacing the GPU may not raise fps, so check the combination before buying.
