Performance comparison: which is faster?
Radeon R9 390X (AMD, 2015) and Radeon RX 580 (AMD, 2017) are compared here. Compare scores and VRAM, generative AI usability, and CPUs that pair well with each GPU.
Overall performance: nearly equal
Both have 8GB of VRAM, so they support a similar range of generative AI models. For gaming, prioritize performance score and CPU compatibility; for AI, prioritize VRAM.
Relative performance score (higher is faster). Actual fps varies by resolution, game, and CPU configuration.
| Item | R9 390X | RX 580 |
|---|---|---|
| Performance Score | 7,500 | 7,500 |
| VRAM | 8GB | 8GB |
| Manufacturer | AMD | AMD |
| Series | R9 | RX 5000 |
| Release Year | 2015 | 2017 |
| Compatible CPU Example | Core i5-3570K | Core i5-3570K |
| If You Want To... | Recommended |
|---|---|
| Prioritize high fps and smooth performance in demanding games | R9 390X |
| Run larger generative AI and LLM models | R9 390X |
| Prioritize value and adequate performance | R9 390X (the lower model is often sufficient) |
Their scores are nearly identical (R9 390X: 7500 points / RX 580: 7500 points). In this case, compare price, VRAM, and power draw.
Both have 8GB of VRAM, so the range of generative AI models they can run is nearly the same.
Using our guideline, Core i5-3570K pairs well with R9 390X and Core i5-3570K with RX 580 (CPU:GPU ≈ 0.9:1). If the CPU is too weak, replacing the GPU may not raise fps, so check the combination before buying.
