Performance comparison: which is faster?
Radeon RX 6950 XT (AMD, 2022) and Radeon RX 7800 XT (AMD, 2023) are compared here. Compare scores and VRAM, generative AI usability, and CPUs that pair well with each GPU.
Overall performance: RX 6950 XT is about 10.9% faster
Both have 16GB of VRAM, so they support a similar range of generative AI models. For gaming, prioritize performance score and CPU compatibility; for AI, prioritize VRAM.
Relative performance score (higher is faster). Actual fps varies by resolution, game, and CPU configuration.
| Item | RX 6950 XT | RX 7800 XT |
|---|---|---|
| Performance Score | 25,500 | 23,000 |
| VRAM | 16GB | 16GB |
| Manufacturer | AMD | AMD |
| Series | RX 6000 | RX 7000 |
| Release Year | 2022 | 2023 |
| Compatible CPU Example | Ryzen 7 8700G | Ryzen 7 5800X |
| If You Want To... | Recommended |
|---|---|
| Prioritize high fps and smooth performance in demanding games | RX 6950 XT |
| Run larger generative AI and LLM models | RX 6950 XT |
| Prioritize value and adequate performance | RX 7800 XT (the lower model is often sufficient) |
RX 6950 XT is about 10.9% higher by score (RX 6950 XT: 25500 points / RX 7800 XT: 23000 points). Actual fps also varies by resolution, game, and CPU, so price is a reasonable deciding factor when the gap is only a few percent.
Both have 16GB of VRAM, so the range of generative AI models they can run is nearly the same.
Using our guideline, Ryzen 7 8700G pairs well with RX 6950 XT and Ryzen 7 5800X with RX 7800 XT (CPU:GPU ≈ 0.9:1). If the CPU is too weak, replacing the GPU may not raise fps, so check the combination before buying.
