句動詞 phrasal verbs
「動詞 + 副詞 / 前置詞」で1つの意味を作る句動詞は、英会話・読解に不可欠です。頻出 30 個を一気に整理します。
基本ルール
動詞 + 副詞（分離可能）：目的語を間に入れることもできる。
- give up「あきらめる」「Don't give up your dream.」/「Don't give it up.」
- put off「延期する」= postpone「Let's put off the meeting.」/「Let's put it off.」
- turn down「断る / 音量を下げる」「She turned down the offer.」
- look up「（辞書で）調べる」「Look up the word in the dictionary.」
- pick up「拾う / 迎えに行く」「I'll pick you up at 7.」
動詞 + 前置詞（分離不可）：目的語を間に入れない。
- get over「克服する / 立ち直る」「She got over her illness.」
- look after「世話をする」= take care of「Can you look after my dog?」
- come across「偶然出会う / 偶然見つける」「I came across an old photo.」
- look forward to + 動名詞「楽しみに待つ」「I'm looking forward to seeing you.」
3語句動詞（動詞 + 副詞 + 前置詞）：分離不可。
- look up to「尊敬する」「I look up to my father.」
- look down on「見下す」「Don't look down on others.」
- put up with「我慢する」= tolerate「I can't put up with this noise.」
- come up with「思いつく」「She came up with a great idea.」
- catch up with「追いつく」「Run! Catch up with them!」
- get along with「うまくやる」「I get along with my classmates.」
She finally got over her fear of flying.（彼女はついに飛行機恐怖症を克服した）
I came up with a new idea while taking a shower.（シャワー中に新しいアイデアを思いついた）
We put off the picnic because of the rain.（雨のためピクニックを延期した）
I look forward to hearing from you.（お返事を楽しみに待っています）← to のあとは動名詞
注意点
① 目的語が代名詞の場合は必ず分離：「× turn down it → ○ turn it down」「× pick up me → ○ pick me up」
② look forward to の to は前置詞：後ろは動名詞（-ing）。「× look forward to see → ○ look forward to seeing」
③ 同じ動詞でも副詞で意味激変：give up（あきらめる）/ give in（屈する）/ give out（配布する）/ give away（無料であげる）
④ phrasal verb は1つずつ訳すと意味不明：「look down on others」を直訳「下を見る他人について」では誤訳。「軽蔑する」と1つの意味で覚える。
- 動詞 + 副詞は分離可能（give up / put off / pick up）
- 動詞 + 前置詞は分離不可（look after / come across）
- 3語句動詞：look up to / look down on / put up with / come up with
- 代名詞の場合は必ず動詞と副詞の間に入れる
- look forward to + 動名詞（to は前置詞）
練習
- 適切な句動詞を空所に入れなさい：I can't ___ ___ his rude attitude.（我慢できない、3語句動詞）
- 「彼は祖父をとても尊敬している」を look up to を使って英訳しなさい。
- 誤りを正しなさい：I'm looking forward to see you next week.
